Alcohol Free Directory is committed to making this website accessible, including for anyone using assistive technology. We’re working towards meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the recognised standard for web accessibility. We’re not claiming to fully meet it yet, but it’s an active goal we’re building towards, and we’ll keep improving as the site develops.
What we’ve done so far
- Chosen brand colours specifically for strong contrast, dark text on light backgrounds throughout, rather than pale-on-pale combinations
- Written clear alt text for our own site images, logos and icons
- Used clear heading structure so the page makes sense read aloud by a screen reader
- Labelled all form fields, including the business listing submission form
- Made sure buttons and links describe what they do, not generic text like “click here”
- Added a cookie banner that can be used with a keyboard alone
Where we can’t guarantee everything
Businesses submit their own listings, including their own photos and descriptions, so we can’t guarantee every piece of listing content meets full accessibility standards. Some embedded content, such as maps and payment forms, also relies on the accessibility of those external providers (for example Stripe or Google Maps).
A personal note
I’m autistic and ADHD, and I’ve built this site with neuroaffirmative design in mind wherever I could, alongside standard accessibility practice: clear layouts, plain language, and no unnecessary noise or clutter. That said, no single site can meet everyone’s needs, and I know this one won’t be perfect for everyone either. Please let us know if something isn’t working for you, so that you don’t have to struggle in silence.
